Top Malbec to Celebrate World Malbec Day

11/04/2019 USAWR Team brings to you the list of top Malbec wines to celebrate and cherish World Malbec Day.

World Malbec Day is celebrated on April 17, to memorialize the day, when president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of Argentina officially expressed his desire to reshape Argentina's wine industry. On that day, back in 1853, he tasked Michel Aimé Pouget, a French soil expert, to bring over new vines. Amongst his selection, was Malbec. Malbec wine is produced from the Malbec purple grape variety which is used in making red wine. Malbec's French plantations are now found primarily in South West France's Cahors.

As an Argentine varietal wine, it is increasingly being celebrated and is being grown around the world. In the following years, specifically during the '90s, Argentina positioned Malbec as their star varietal. More than 10, 000 acres were planted and it became the undeniable leader of the country's exportations. Wine lovers around the world have realized and applauded Argentine Malbec, especially in the United States. The name, "Malbec World Day", translates to "Día Mundial del Malbec" in Spanish which means, "Malbec throughout the world".  Somehow, the name has stuck to this day and continues to confuse English speakers, as most end up calling it "World Malbec Day" or "Malbec Mondo" for those who like alliteration.

Argentina positioned Malbec as its star varietal in the following years, especially during the 1990s. More than 10, 000 acres were planted and it became the undeniable leader of the country's exportation market. Argentine Malbec has been found and applauded by wine admirers around the globe, particularly in the United States.

In 2011, Wines of Argentina that are responsible for communicating the Argentine wine brand around the world, established April 17 as Malbec World Day. Lis Clément, their Head of Marketing and Communications at that time founded this day because she was convinced that this celebration would help position Malbec as one of Argentina's wine gems. Argentina's Malbec would lead the way to position Argentina as one of the world's leading oenological centres with excellent quality, always surprising and diverse.

Nowadays, more than 60 cities around the world (coordinated by the Foreign Affairs Office of Argentina) host events around Malbec, Argentine food and lifestyle. In order to link Malbec and Argentine culture, a theme is created every year. This framework enables every celebration to be creative and adapt to the peculiarity of each country. Malbec was first planted in France, then reached its highest advancement point in Argentina and is currently travelling around the world to become one of the key players in the international wine industry.

At the same time, the cities of New York City, Toronto and Ottawa hosted "crushing parties" with Argentine grapes with the intention of producing a special Malbec wine to be used for toasting at the 2012 Malbec World Day edition.
