29/01/2025 In our 'Meet the Buyers' series, we uncover insights from the judges of USA Wine Ratings, exploring their stories and the key factors that influence their decisions

In this edition of our "Meet the Buyers" series, we sit down with Donald Norton, President at the Noe Valley Wine & Spirits, to gain valuable insights into his approach to selecting wines for his business. Donald evaluates wines based on a careful balance of quality, value, and packaging, ensuring each wine resonates with consumers while maintaining a standout presence in the market.

The USA Wine Ratings is a wine competition that recognizes and promotes marketable, consumer-driven wines that excel in quality, value, and packaging. It focuses on independent producers, regional wineries, and national retailers.

Exploring the Wine World

In the world of wine, there are countless paths to discovery and passion, and for Donald Norton, his journey was sparked by a few “epiphany” bottles. Those bottles, which revealed the depth and beauty of wine, ignited a lifelong passion and led him to pursue a career in the wine industry. With nearly 20 years of experience in top-performing sales and account management, coupled with a business degree, Donald has a unique ability to bring consumers exceptional wines, from everyday selections to rare finds.

Balancing Quality, Value, and Packaging

When evaluating a wine, Donald looks for a balance between quality, value, and packaging. “The wine should have the appropriate characteristics for the varietal and where it is grown,” he says. For him, a wine must be balanced and free of obvious flaws. Donald also factors in the quality-to-price ratio for every wine he samples.

Packaging, of course, plays a role in a wine’s appeal, Donald prefers packaging that stands out without being too “poppy” or over-the-top. “The wine should be the star of the show,” he explains. “But if the packaging is poor, the wine will struggle to sell unless it is sold by well-trained staff.”

A Passion for Emerging Regions

When asked about the wine regions and varietals he’s particularly passionate about, he talks about Piedmont, Italy. “I keep falling further in love with the wines of Piedmont, especially Nebbiolo!” he says. The region’s wines, with their complex aromas and rich history, have captured his attention and continue to inspire his work. Looking ahead, Donald is eager to see more wines from Sicily and other emerging wine regions. “I hope to see more wines from up-and-coming producers from around the world,” he shares.
