In this edition of our "Meet the Buyers" series, Kylie-Ayn Kennedy, Buyer and Lead at Bay Grape offers valuable insights into her journey in the wine world and how she balances the three critical components when evaluating a wine: quality, value, and packaging. This series offers insights from top wine experts, helping winemakers and brands gain a valuable understanding of what stands out to judges and how to present their wines at the USA Wine Ratings, in ways that connect with today’s consumers.
The USA Wine Ratings is a wine competition that recognizes and promotes marketable, consumer-driven wines that excel in quality, value, and packaging. It focuses on independent producers, regional wineries, and national retailers.
My journey in wine began a week after my 21st birthday when I got my first position in a small old school wine bar and deli on the sunset strip in Los Angeles. Wine is a balance of creativity and science with an infinite capacity for learning. Wine is a vehicle for sharing space and building community, so being a part of that in any level is a gift.
The most important thing to me is the quality of the wine itself. Is it balanced? Is it exciting? Does it make me feel something? Then, after the initial reaction - I like to compare the quality of the wine to the value. I can sell a fantastic wine in less than stellar packaging, but a customer will generally gravitate towards a visually appealing bottle more often.
I am very passionate about Rieslings, which to me are one of the most misunderstood varietals from customers. Their versatility is unmatched. I have been enjoying wines from Croatia and Hungary a lot lately. I also love wines from the Alto Adige - lots of varietals to introduce people to and get them excited about.

While packaging isn't the most important thing to me when I am curating my selections in shop, it does absolutely effect the way a consumer buys wine. I think the way this competition handles that aspect of the rating of wine is appropriate.
