Shadow Mountain Vineyards & Winery started as a private, family-owned vineyard that was first planted in 1945 by Italian-born Gus Mase. The family and the 2nd generation continued planting in the 1960's and 70's. The vineyard property was sold in 1990, and became a licensed, bonded winery in 1995, adding an on-site tasting room in 1999. The vineyards have continued to expand, with the latest planting - Chardonnay - in 2014. With those owners' retirement after 30 years, the 4th "generation" took over operations in early 2023, where the continuation of the winemaking program - focusing on both reds and whites with minimal intervention. Reds are mainly aged in American Appalachian Oak, while whites are mainly stainless steel treated. With over 15 varietals, Shadow Mountain produces a mix of single-varietal wines as well as blends, and is all estate grown and bottled, including the Tempranillo, Albarino, and Sangiovese, which are grown in the SMV-managed Volcan Vista and Buena Vista Vineyards - all in Warner Springs. Vineyard elevation is an average of 3,300 feet, with a great warm/cool day-to-night temperature shift and mostly a decomposed granite, quartz and mica soil. Placed only 30 miles S/SE of Temecula, and near Palomar Mountain, Anza Borrego, and Julian, Shadow Mountain Vineyards is in a prime location for visitors - with a small indoor tasting room, vast outdoor patio spaces and an event tent where there is typically live music at least one day each weekend. The beautiful views and peaceful setting make for a great day trip and wine tasting adventure!
