About San Joaquin Wine Company

Mission statement at San Joaquin Wine Co. is: “To produce the highest quality wines possible at affordable prices from select local grape varieties.” All of ‘em at San Joaquin Wine Co. and “Moody Press Cellars” are committed to quality and value. San Joaquin Wine Co look forward to future vintages and increasing their selections for you to taste!

Steve Schafer, along with wife Cindy, founded San Joaquin Wine Company in 2005 as the fulfillment of a personal passion. Steve, being in a family farm business, has grown over 12 varietals of wine grapes, along with almonds, for over 40 years in Madera County.

Steve is heavily involved in the California Association of Wine Grape Growers (CAWG), an organization that advocates for California wine grape issues. During Steve’s tenure as Chairman for CAWG, he promoted that growers would never receive the full value of grapes they produced until they became a vintner themselves. Steve is also an advocate of sustainable winegrowing practices, introduced by CAWG and Wine Institute in 2001. Sustainable farming is a commitment to better stewardship of the vineyards, as well as to the community at large.

Over the course of four years, Steve purchased the winery equipment necessary to take his grapes to bottle. Wine production started in 2009 with 4 varietals in the “Moody Press Cellars” label and has grown to 18 different varietals and 9 labels. SJWC now sells over 22,000 cases, which are primarily inter-state wholesale sales, and exports to Japan, China, Canada, Denmark and Vietnam. Retail sales contribute to the business through our on-site Tasting Room, local restaurants and stores.

In 2010, our winemaker, Eric Natali, and business partners Joey and Diane Sagariballa were brought in to solidify our winery team. The Tasting Room and Event facility was completed in December of 2014. This beautiful facility has been host to many weddings, business functions, fundraisers and other special occasions.

Here at San Joaquin Wine Company, we strive to make a great impression on your palate, and everlasting memories during your wedding or special event for years to come.

The San Joaquin Wine Co is the largest AVA area in California, larger than Napa and Sonoma combined and is home to 4 American Viticulture Areas. The first grapes were planted in 1850. The San Joaquin valley is filled with fertile and rich soils, which are among the richest and deepest in the world. The mountain ranges in this region drain into the San Joaquin River, and the river deposits the deep loam soils, with are characteristic of the region. The combination of soil and regional weather creates growing conditions that are often ideal and create vines that are naturally vigorous.

The San Joaquin Valley specializes in fruit forward, heat tolerant varieties similar to those found in southwest Australia, Spain and Southern Italy.
